Designing Your Own Cross Stitch Pattern: From Sketch to Chart

by StitchlyStudio 26 Jun 2026

In short: You design your own cross-stitch pattern in 3 steps: choose or sketch an initial image, convert it into a grid with a DMC palette using software like Pic2Pat, KG-Chart or StitchSketch, and print the finished PDF. Most of the work isn't the stitching itself—but rather the correct selection, color palette, and contrast calibration.

Step 1: Image source

Three ways to your pattern:

  • Your own sketch or drawing — from paper to pixels. Works well for simple motifs.
  • Your own photo — portrait, landscape, house. Requires a sharp image with good contrast. Photo instructions.
  • Pixel art design — directly in the editor. Ideal for pixel art and retro motifs.

Step 2: Select software

Beginner / Free

  • Pic2Pat.com — web-based, free, simple.
  • Stitch Fiddle — freemium, web-based, simple UI.
  • StitchSketch — free iPad app.

Advanced / Paid

  • KG-Chart — Windows software, professional standard, one-time payment approx. €30–€80.
  • PCStitch — similar professional software, US market.
  • WinStitch / MacStitch — Windows/Mac, very comprehensive.

Step 3: Process image

  1. Upload image to the software.
  2. Set stitch count (width × height). More stitches = more detail, but longer stitching time.
  3. Limit color palette. Ideally to DMC colors, 20–60 colors. More colors look more realistic, but are annoying to stitch.
  4. Check contrast. Does the image look as recognizable on fabric as on screen? If not, adjust for lighter shadows or darker highlights.
  5. Draw backstitch lines for outlines.

Tips for image selection

  • Sharp contours. Blurred images become even more blurred in stitches.
  • Clear background. Cropped or deleted backgrounds yield better results.
  • Good contrast. Light/dark areas must be distinct.
  • At least 1500×2000 px for photos.

Stitch count and level of detail

Stitches Level of Detail Suitable for
50×50 Very coarse Pixel art, logos
100×100 Simple motif Animals, small pictures
150×200 Moderate details Portraits, small landscapes
200×300 High level of detail True portraits, architecture
300×400+ Very high level of detail Photo-realism

Test stitching

Before you start the entire pattern:

  • Stitch a 5×5 cm test area from the main motif.
  • Check if colors work well together.
  • Adjust contrast or color palette, if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which software for my own cross-stitch pattern?

Free: Pic2Pat.com, Stitch Fiddle. Pro: KG-Chart, PCStitch, WinStitch/MacStitch.

How many stitches should my pattern have?

For beginners, 100×100 to 150×200. More = more detail but longer to stitch.

How many colors can I use?

For manageable projects, 20–60 DMC colors. Over 80 becomes tedious.

Should I use an image or a photo?

Photo if realistic. Sketch if stylized or pixel art. Both work.

How do I test if my pattern works?

Stitch a small 5×5 cm test area from the main motif and evaluate the color and contrast effect.

Summary

With the right software (free: Pic2Pat / Stitch Fiddle, pro: KG-Chart), you can convert a sketch or photo into your own counted cross-stitch pattern. Sharp image, limited DMC palette, realistic stitch count. If you don't want to use software, you can upload your photo to us and get a complete kit.
