Tapestry needle size: Which needle for which Aida count?
In short: Use a tapestry needle (blunt tip) that matches your Aida count: Size 22 for 6–11ct, Size 24 for 12–14ct, Size 26 for 16ct, Size 28 for 18ct and finer. Larger number = thinner needle. If your needle is difficult to push through the holes or distorts the fabric, it's the wrong one.
Needle Size by Aida Count
| Aida Count | Tapestry Needle Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6ct–9ct | 20 | Large count, children's kits |
| 10ct–11ct | 22 | Beginner-friendly |
| 12ct–14ct | 24 | Most common |
| 16ct | 26 | Finer details |
| 18ct–22ct | 28 | Very fine work |
| 22ct+ | 28 or 30 | Specialty linen |
Important: higher number = thinner needle. A size 28 is thinner than a size 22.
What is a Tapestry Needle?
- Blunt tip — glides between fabric threads, doesn't pierce them.
- Large eye — accommodates multiple strands of embroidery floss.
- Smooth, polished surface — pulls through fabric without snagging.
For cross-stitch on Aida, you always need a tapestry needle — not a sharp embroidery or sewing needle.
How to tell if you have the wrong needle?
- Needle is difficult to push through the fabric.
- Fabric distorts or holes are stretched.
- Thread frays or snags.
- Thread constantly slips out of the eye.
Nickel-plated or gold-plated?
- Nickel-plated is standard. Inexpensive, smooth, perfectly adequate.
- Gold-plated is more slippery and resistant to perspiration. Ideal for long stitching evenings.
- Platinum-plated is the smoothest option, but a luxury.
When to replace needles?
- If it feels rougher pulling through the fabric.
- If it bends.
- If the eye becomes rough and cuts the thread.
- After approx. 100+ hours of use.
Needles are inexpensive — replace them early.
