Turn photo into cross stitch pattern: how to create your own embroidery kit
Stitchly StudioDeel
Imagine hanging a picture of your dog, your partner, or your wedding day on the wall. But not as a print – as a hand-embroidered work of art. Thousands of tiny crosses that together form exactly that photo.
That's exactly what a photo cross-stitch pattern makes possible. And unlike generic embroidery kits, the end result is 100% unique. In this guide, you'll learn how it works and what to look out for.
How does the conversion actually work?
When you upload a photo, it is analyzed pixel by pixel. Each pixel in the final pattern corresponds to a cross-stitch. The software (or a designer) converts the colors into suitable DMC thread codes – typically between 40 and 80 colors per image.
The result: a counted pattern with symbols, a material list (Aida fabric in the correct size, all DMC threads in the correct quantity), an embroidery needle – all in one box.
Which photos are best suited?
Not every photo will make a beautiful embroidered picture. These criteria help:
1. High Resolution
Minimum 1500×2000 pixels. At lower resolutions, details appear blurred.
2. Good Contrast
Light and dark areas must be clearly distinguishable. A gray, dimly lit photo will become a gray, dimly stitched picture.
3. Clear Subject
A face, a pet, a landscape – something with a clear shape. Very blurred backgrounds work better than chaotic ones.
4. Good Lighting
Daylight is ideal. Avoid images with harsh shadows or flash that flattens the face.
Which photos work less well?
- Very blurry images
- Photos with mostly similar colors (e.g., only brown tones)
- Images with many people far away
- Low resolution from social media
How big should the cross-stitch kit be?
For a photo cross-stitch kit, the size directly determines the level of detail:
- 30×40 cm: Good for clear subjects (dog, one person, landscape). Stitching time: 60–80 hours.
- 40×50 cm: More detail possible (face recognizable from further away). Stitching time: 100–150 hours.
- 50×70 cm: Maximum detail, almost photorealistic. Stitching time: 200+ hours.
Tip: For beginners, 30×40 cm is perfectly sufficient. You don't want to invest 200 hours in your first project.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to stitch a photo kit?
30×40 cm: approx. 60–80 hours. This can be achieved in 8–10 weeks with 1 hour per day.
Can I use black and white photos?
Yes. These often become very elegant, monochrome embroidered pictures – with fewer colors, but a lot of atmosphere. What happens with background blur?
It is retained in the pattern as a soft-focused background. This adds depth and makes the main subject clearer.
How many DMC colors does a photo cross-stitch kit contain?
Typically 40–80 different thread colors. More colors = more realism, but also more changing during stitching.
