Which Photo Works for a Cross Stitch Kit? 8 Quality Checkpoints

Why photo quality decides everything with a stitched portrait
Cross stitch works with flat, block-like color areas — each pixel becomes a colored stitch. Unlike a photo print nothing can be polished later: if the eye is blurry, the eye stays blurry. If the light casts harsh shadows, those shadows stay visible.

1. Sharpness in the face
If the face is blurry or out of focus, it becomes an unrecognizable cluster of color blocks in cross stitch. Zoom into the photo on your screen — can you clearly see the eyes? Eyebrows? Hairline? Then it works.
Rule of thumb: if you zoom to 200% and details are still sharp, the photo is sharp enough. Instagram photos are often sharp at small size but blur as they enlarge.
2. Light on the face
Soft, even lighting works best. Ideal, best to worst:
- Golden hour outdoor light (first hour after sunrise or last before sunset)
- Soft afternoon sun with shadow on face (e.g. under a tree)
- Window light indoors (subject turned toward the window)
- Overcast day outdoors (natural softbox)
- Avoid: harsh midday sun with hard shadows, flash photos, yellow or blue indoor lighting
3. Calm background
The background becomes part of the stitched portrait. Plain wall, nature, or against the sky works best. Avoid:
- Other people in the background
- Brightly colored advertising or signs
- Complex patterns (wallpaper, busy tiling)
- Strong light spots pulling attention from the subject
4. Resolution of at least 2000 px on the long side
The original file from a modern phone or camera is usually more than enough (5000–12000 px). What does NOT work:
- Screenshots of Instagram or TikTok (too heavily compressed)
- WhatsApp forwards of photos (WhatsApp auto-compresses)
- Photos downloaded via Facebook Messenger
Tip: request the photo via email or AirDrop — that preserves original resolution. For wedding photos: ask your photographer for the RAW file.
5. Aspect ratio matches your desired size
A landscape photo on a portrait canvas won't work without cropping. Think ahead about desired size and check if your photo ratio matches:
- Vertical portrait: 3:4 or 2:3 ratio — works on 30×40 or 40×60
- Square: Instagram square — works on 30×30 or 40×40
- Landscape: 4:3 or 3:2 — works on 40×30 or 40×50 (landscape)
6. Number of people in the photo
More people = more color blocks competing for space. Ideal:
- 1 person: works on any size from 20×30 up
- 2 people: minimum 30×40
- 3–5 people: minimum 40×50 or 40×60
- 6+ people: 50×70 or consider two separate portraits

7. Color palette: rich or limited
Cross stitch handles both well, but it defines the character of the final result:
- Rich colors (outdoor nature, colorful clothing) — lively, illustrated effect
- Limited palette (studio, monochromatic) — classic, portrait-painting effect
- Black and white — works excellently, fewer floss colors needed, dramatic result

8. Emotional weight of the moment
The most underrated check: how emotionally important is this specific moment? A stitched portrait acquires sentimental status through the time in it — combine that with a meaningful photo and the gift becomes irreplaceable.
No good recent photo? Consider a throwback photo (5–10 years old). Cross stitch actually makes older photos look better: yellow-tinted retro colors translate beautifully.

Yes — older photos often stitch beautifully, because the characteristic colors of that time (warm, soft) translate well. Make sure the scan has high resolution; for old paper photos: scan at minimum 600 DPI.

As long as the first four (sharpness, light, background, resolution) are in order, something beautiful is usually possible. The last four are optimizations, not dealbreakers.
