Tapestry Needle Size Guide: Which Needle for Each Aida Count?

by StitchlyStudio 26 Jun 2026 0 comments

TL;DR: Use a tapestry needle (blunt tip) sized to your Aida count: size 22 for 6–11ct, size 24 for 12–14ct, size 26 for 16ct, and size 28 for 18ct and finer. Bigger number = thinner needle. If your needle struggles to pass through the holes or distorts the fabric, you're using the wrong size.

Tapestry needle size chart

Aida count Tapestry needle size Notes
6ct–9ct 20 Large counts, kids' kits
10ct–11ct 22 Beginner-friendly
12ct–14ct 24 Most common count
16ct 26 Finer detail
18ct–22ct 28 Very fine work, evenweave/linen
22ct+ 28 or 30 Specialty linen

Counter-intuitive but true: higher number = thinner needle. A size 28 needle is finer than a size 22.

What is a tapestry needle?

A tapestry needle is a hand-sewing needle with three defining features:

  • Blunt tip — it slides between fabric threads instead of piercing them.
  • Large eye — to fit multiple strands of embroidery floss.
  • Smooth, polished body — passes through fabric without snagging.

Tapestry needles are different from embroidery needles (sharp, smaller eye) and sewing needles (sharp, very small eye). For cross stitch on Aida, you want tapestry every time.

How do you know you're using the wrong needle?

Signs:

  • Needle is hard to push through the fabric — too thick, or you're using a sharp needle by mistake.
  • Fabric warps or distorts — needle too thick.
  • Holes appear permanently stretched — needle definitely too thick.
  • Floss frays or snags — either the eye is too small, or the needle is damaged.
  • Thread keeps falling out of the eye — eye too large, or you're not using enough strands.

Should you use gold-plated or nickel-plated needles?

  • Nickel-plated is standard. Cheap, smooth, perfectly fine for most stitchers.
  • Gold-plated is slicker (passes through fabric with less drag) and resists tarnish from sweaty hands. Good for long sessions or people with skin pH issues.
  • Platinum-plated is the smoothest of all but a luxury.

For most projects, nickel is enough. Upgrade to gold if you stitch for hours and notice drag or finger fatigue.

How many needles do you need?

Two or three is the sweet spot:

  • One working needle in the current color.
  • One spare in your project bag for backup.
  • One "parking" needle if you use the parking method (multiple needles, one per upcoming color block).

Buy a small variety pack (sizes 22, 24, 26) and you're set for almost any Aida count you'll encounter.

When to replace your needle

  • When it feels rougher passing through fabric — plating wears down.
  • When it bends.
  • When the eye chips and starts cutting floss.
  • After 100+ hours of use as a rule of thumb.

Needles are cheap. Replace early.

Special cases

Evenweave fabric (Lugana, Brittney)

Same sizing rules as Aida — match needle size to fabric count.

Linen

Linen counts are listed per inch (28ct, 32ct, 36ct). Use size 26–28 for 28ct, size 28 for 32ct+. Always tapestry blunt.

Backstitch

Same tapestry needle as your cross stitches — don't switch to a sharp needle for backstitch on Aida. Backstitch tutorial here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What needle size for 14 count Aida?

Tapestry needle size 24. This is the most common cross stitch setup.

What needle size for 11 count Aida?

Tapestry needle size 22.

What needle size for 16 count Aida?

Tapestry needle size 26.

What needle size for 18 count Aida?

Tapestry needle size 28.

Is a tapestry needle the same as an embroidery needle?

No. Tapestry needles have a blunt tip; embroidery needles are sharp. Cross stitch on Aida uses tapestry.

Why do bigger numbers mean smaller needles?

It's the traditional sizing convention — the number reflects how many needles can fit in a standard measure. Higher number = thinner.

Can I use one needle size for all Aida counts?

Possible but not ideal. A size 24 works on 11–16 ct in a pinch, but matching the needle to the count gives smoother stitches and less fabric distortion.

In summary

Match your tapestry needle size to your Aida count: 22 for 11ct, 24 for 14ct, 26 for 16ct, 28 for 18ct. Use a small variety pack so you're always covered, and replace needles when they start to drag. The right needle makes stitching smoother and your fabric flatter.
